Fix slow WiFi before upgrading your plan
1. Compare WiFi with a wired connection
Connect a laptop by Ethernet to the router, pause other downloads, and run a test. Then repeat over WiFi near the router. If Ethernet is healthy but WiFi is slow, investigate the wireless network first. If both are consistently slow, check the package limits and contact the ISP with your measurements.
2. Improve router placement
Place the router centrally, above floor level, and in the open. Avoid metal cabinets, thick concrete walls, and corners far from the rooms you use. Keep it away from microwave ovens and other radio equipment. A stronger package cannot fix a radio signal that struggles to reach your device.
3. Choose the right wireless band
5 GHz often provides better speed at short range; 2.4 GHz can reach farther but is frequently more crowded. Modern dual-band routers may choose automatically. If your router allows a safe manual choice, test both in the room where you work. A wired access point or mesh system can help a larger home, especially with Ethernet between access points.
4. Check connected devices and updates
Look for large background downloads, cloud backups, or old devices using the network. Update the router firmware using the manufacturer instructions, and use WPA2-AES or WPA3 security with a strong WiFi password. Avoid factory resets unless you have the ISP configuration and know how to restore it.
5. Restart once, then record the pattern
A normal restart may clear a temporary problem. Repeatedly restarting equipment can hide the pattern without fixing the cause. Record which rooms or devices are affected, the time of day, and whether the router or ONU shows a warning light. Do not unplug or look into the optical fiber connector.
6. Report useful evidence
Share your package speed, a wired result, the date and time, and whether all devices are affected. Ask the ISP to check the line and local congestion. Avoid posting your customer ID, home address, WiFi password, or router administrator credentials in a public forum.
