Start with your building, not a national ranking
Broadband quality can vary between streets and even buildings. Make a shortlist of providers that confirm service at your address. Ask neighbours using the same local connection about evening slowdowns, recent outages, and how quickly support responds. A nationwide listing is not a guarantee that a cable can reach your home.
Match the package to simultaneous use
Count the people who will stream, join video calls, game, or download at the same time. For a small household, 25–50 Mbps can be a useful starting point; busy homes with several high-resolution streams may want 100 Mbps or more. These are planning estimates, not promises: device quality, WiFi, upload speed, and the service you use also matter.
Work calls and cloud backups need dependable upload speed. Online games benefit from stable latency and low packet loss more than a large advertised download number. Ask whether the quoted speed is international bandwidth or a higher speed limited to local cache or BDIX traffic.
Compare the total cost
- Monthly price including applicable VAT and taxes.
- Installation, ONU, router, deposit, and replacement charges.
- Contract period, cancellation terms, and any fair-use policy.
- Public IP or IPv6 availability if you need remote access.
- What happens after an introductory promotion ends.
Check support and power backup
Ask how to open a fault ticket, the actual support hours, and whether the local distribution equipment has backup power. Your router and ONU also need power during an outage. Keep the written package details and a support contact before paying.
Measure after installation
